Most warranties are only valid if the car has been serviced to manufacturer's
schedule at an authorised dealer. A little leeway may be allowed - 'servicing
tolerances' are often 500 to 1000 miles or 30 days over scheduled mileages or
dates. Service records (stamped service or warranty books) are needed to
maintain the warranty terms.
Validity and extent of cover can be affected by usage (driving school cars,
rally cars, mini-cabs) and fitting of non-standard parts. Other exclusions
include misuse, neglect, and faults subject to a recall. Mechanical faults that
existed before the policy was bought are excluded - so there's no point in
signing up for a warranty if you suspect your car is about to give up.
